We are delighted you are considering the Institute for graduate study. We offer three distinct degree programs: Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts, and a dual MS/MA degree in Conservation and Art History.

I am now the curatorial assistant to the chief curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art and have the opportunity to further my interests developed at the IFA by assisting on exhibitions on contemporary living artists.

In the classroom and in the field
Institute students are taught in small groups. They have opportunities to take classes in New York City’s museums and galleries.
Institute students have full access to the resources of NYU and to graduate classes taught throughout the University.
Unique in art history and conservation programs, all Institute students take courses together and in both fields.
Institute students can participate in archaeological excavations at major monumental sites in Egypt, Greece, Italy, and Turkey.
Institute students can benefit from funded travel opportunities, in group trips with professors and for independent experience.

I took full advantage of the Institute's close ties to the city’s cultural institutions. Read more from alumnus David BardeenHaving completed the Masters Program at the Institute this spring, I am heading West! I will be pursuing a PhD in Art History at UCLA. I leave the MA program at the Institute well prepared for the rigors of a PhD program, with a more focused set of interests, and with terrific new friends and colleagues who will be a resource as I continue my studies and build a career. I also look forward to being an Institute alum and staying apprised of the Institute’s ongoing public programs and initiatives.

In the art world
Institute students can be curators. They have opportunities to organize exhibitions in the Great Hall of Duke House and to become part of the NYU curatorial collaborative.
Institute students organize the annual “Artists at the Institute” series, which identifies the most exciting contemporary artists and brings them to the Institute community.
Institute students connect directly to the foremost thinkers in our fields, organizing the Institute’s public lecture series, work-in-progress seminars, and acting as conference coordinators.

As an administrator working in the scholarly environment of the Research Center I am continually applying the art historical training that I received at the Institute. Read more from alumna Lindsay GanterIn my current role as Assistant for Administration in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art I am responsible for maintaining the Center’s microsite and work closely with the Curator in Charge on programming initiatives and the development of our Fellowship program. As an administrator working in the scholarly environment of the Research Center I am continually applying the art historical training that I received as an MA student at the Institute of Fine Arts, whether it be in my communications with curators or when I am reviewing content for the microsite.
