Areas of interest: 18th century and 19th century art, phenomenology and neuroscience, French social history.


Madison Hummer received her BA in Art History with minors in Classical Studies and Philosophy from Trinity College. She is interested in European artwork produced during the 18th and 19th centuries under the influence of colonialism and global trade. She is particularly interested in the application of phenomenology to the interpretation of artistic intent and viewer experience. Her undergraduate research focused on Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon and the artist’s relationship to African objects. Before coming to the Institute, she worked as a chef and restaurateur. She is originally from Los Angeles, California.
