Fall 2020 Curricular Plan for the Institute of Fine Arts
June 22, 2020
The Institute of Fine Arts will resume in-person coursework for the Fall 2020 semester to the fullest extent possible while taking into consideration the safety of our students, faculty, and staff.
The Institute is in the process of evaluating our class spaces to ensure they are both academically functional and in full compliance with social distancing measures set by the University, the City, and the State. Coursework will continue to take place in the main floor Seminar Room and the Lecture Hall. In Fall 2020, the Basement Seminar Room will not be used for coursework. Instead we are converting the John Loeb Room into a functional classroom space.
We are also staggering start and end times for all courses that will meet in-person so that no two courses start or end within the same thirty minute timeblock. We encourage students to view our weekly schedule of courses to fully understand what this may look like.
Certain courses will meet on Zoom. Those courses are noted on the weekly schedule, the catalog of courses, and on Albert. When viewing courses on any listing, please ensure you pay attention to the course format. On Albert, that format will be designated under the method of instruction category ("in person", "blended", "online").
Please note that this staggered schedule is for courses taking place in the Duke House (which includes the Conservation course Technology and Structure of Works of Art I). A fuller and separate announcement is forthcoming from the Conservation Center detailing the Chan House class schedule.
We will also ensure that all courses offered in-person have an online option for any student who is unable to attend the course in person, whether by virtue of location or health concerns. Students who have a question about online options are encouraged to discuss their individual situations with both the Academic Office and the instructor so that an ideal situation may be established.
Finally, to prioritize this return to in-person courses and to continue to monitor the safety of any gatherings, programming will remain largely online for the Fall semester. This applies to conventional programming, such as the Institute's wide array of public lectures and events, as well as student-oriented programming, such as the series of professionalization workshops offered by Professor Thelma K. Thomas, Director of Graduate Studies.
Any students with questions or concerns about Fall 2020 coursework may reach out to the Academic Office or to Director Christine Poggi directly. We look forward to welcoming all of you to the Duke House as soon as possible.
