Sanam Temple 2021
The Sanam Temple Project was on hiatus in 2020-21, due to pandemic travel restrictions. We are also unable to travel this coming winter, as Sudan continues to weather storms beyond COVID. We are thinking of our Sudanese friends and colleagues from afar as they fight for a stable, democratically-elected government, and we are praying for everyone’s health and safety. When we are able to return, we are planning various remote sensing surveys in order to trace the extent of our recently discovered early first-millennium BCE monumental mud brick building. This will help us plan future excavation at this unprecedentedly well-preserved structure that will be vital for improving our knowledge of this formative period for the Napatan state.
