Juan Gabriel Ramírez Bolívar focuses on Modern Latin American Art and artistic exchanges between Europe and the Americas, specifically the migration of artists, the political uses of art, and its role in nation-making processes. He is currently working on his dissertation, The Idea of Hispanoamérica in the Visual and Material Culture of Mexico and Colombia (1920-1940), and has received the support of the Global Research Initiative of NYU and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He organized events of IFA Latin America and made part of the editorial board of the peer-reviewed journal Lapis: The Journal of the Institute of Fine Arts.
