Madison Hummer
PhD Candidate
Areas of interest: European and American art of the long nineteenth century; intellectual and cultural histories; art, stillness, and gender; pathologized color.
In her research on the long nineteenth century, Madison Hummer engages firmly in the sense of the Sublime. Her work invokes death, disease, and the uncanny, and she researches cross-disciplinary with early modern science to delve into the subconscious processes of both artist and viewer. She attained her MA from the IFA prior to entering the PhD program, and wrote her master’s thesis on Odilon Redon’s semiotic connections to hysteria and hypnosis. Originally from Los Angeles, she trained as a chef and owned The Good Whisk, a meal delivery service, prior to her academic career.
