Contemporary Art Conservation
The contemporary art conservation curriculum focuses on the study and conservation of artworks whose physical integrity, meaning, and experience may unfold over time. The program builds on the Conservation Center’s graduate specialization in time-based media (TBM) conservation, established in 2018, and situates TBM within the broader context of contemporary artistic practice. Students study conceptual, ephemeral, and instruction-based works, as well as installation, performance, organic and inorganic materials, electronic hardware, software, and networked systems. They examine the materials, technologies, systems, and environments that constitute these works, while considering how artistic intent, function, duration, installation, and audience experience inform conservation decisions. Emphasis is placed on close examination, instrumental analysis, technical and historical research, documentation, the recognition and interpretation of change and obsolescence, and the development of ethical and sustainable conservation strategies. The curriculum recognizes that contemporary artworks increasingly function as complex relationships among materials, technologies, instructions, environments, and people rather than as discrete physical objects.
Advanced coursework allows students to pursue individual interests within the broader field of contemporary art conservation, with specialized study in audiovisual art, digital preservation, programming, electronics, exhibition and installation, ethics and authenticity, and emerging technologies. The curriculum brings together conservation, art history, science, engineering, computer science, and media preservation, reflecting the increasingly interconnected nature of contemporary artistic practice. Specialized projects and collaborations with museums, collections, artist studios, foundations, archives, and conservation specialists provide opportunities to work across diverse materials and conservation contexts. Through this integrated approach, students develop the analytical, technological, ethical, and conceptual skills needed to address the complex conservation challenges of modern and contemporary art.
