Georgy Mamedov

Georgy Mamedov is an independent curator, writer, and activist. His work critically reinterprets Soviet socialism in Central Asia and the broader post-Soviet space. Mamedov co-authored and co-edited A Book on Happiness for Young (and not so) LGBT (and not only) People (Bishkek, 2020), Utterly Other (Bishkek, 2018), Queer Communism is Ethics(Moscow, 2016), Concepts of the Soviet in Central Asia (Bishkek, 2016), and Bishkek Utopian (Bishkek, 2015). In 2011, he co-curated the Lingua Franca, Central Asia Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale, with Boris Chukhovich and Oksana Shatalova. In Bishkek, Mamedov lectured at the American University of Central Asia and co-founded STAB (School of Theory and Activism, Bishkek). His curatorial work has been showcased internationally, and he received the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture in 2015. Mamedov joined the University of Melbourne’s Research Initiative on Post-Soviet Space (RIPSS) as a graduate scholar in 2025.
