Alexey Ulko

Alexey Ulko is an art critic and filmmaker based in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, with over thirty years of experience in education, cultural research, and interdisciplinary project design. His practice centers on contemporary Central Asian art, contemporary theory, and cross-cultural dialogue. He currently chairs the Uzbekistan Amateur Filmmakers Association, supporting socially engaged film and visual storytelling initiatives. He obtained a degree in Linguistics from Samarkand State University in 1991 and an MEd in Teacher Training from the University of Exeter in 2001. Since 2011, Ulko has co-curated projects at the intersection of art and social research, including We Treasure Our Lucid Dreams, Silk Road Songbook, and the international collaboration ἀγάπη. He has co-authored several books and over 50 articles, featured in e-flux, Mousse Publishing, and EastEast, where he has explored art and cultural history, postcolonial discourse, censorship, and architectural heritage.
